Today, we have a big pair of announcements: welcome to Omesh Fabiani and also to Johan Batubara–our newest additions to the senior team. Omesh joins as our Chief Financial Officer, and Johan as Executive Director, Indonesia.

Together, we’re going to keep building Openspace as the leading regional investment firm, using active intelligence to back the next wave of Southeast Asian technology companies. The decision to strengthen the team with Omesh and Johan comes as we continue to expand on our multi-stage fund strategy which now comprises early-stage, mid-stage and crypto opportunities. Our Indonesia-based portfolio is our largest geographic allocation and  has grown significantly since we led the Series A in 2014 for Gojek (now GoTo) and includes Pluang, Halodoc, FinAccel, Tanihub, Zenius, iSeller and JIWA.

“To invest in the exciting regional opportunity at hand for Openspace and our investors, we need a team with a depth of operating experience and regional expertise. Omesh and Johan are best-in-class” said Hian Goh, Founding Partner of Openspace.

Omesh comes to us from Standard Chartered, where he led the regional coverage of financial and strategic investors. He worked side-by-side with private equity, venture capital, sovereign wealth fund and other institutional investor clients on strategic transactions for their funds and portfolio companies, as well as helped companies raise capital. Before that, he was at UBS in the corporate finance and M&A teams. Whilst there, he was responsible for the origination and execution of numerous financing, IPO and M&A transactions across SEA.

“Our fast growing  market ecosystem needs to deliver on its promise  with a world-class level of financial control, balance sheet optimization and strong CFO networks across the portfolio. Omesh as a dedicated and experienced CFO in this role is another step along this path” said Shane Chesson, Founding Partner at Openspace.
“It’s a very interesting time for venture in Southeast Asia with a deepening of the ecosystem, strong and growing interest from global investors and corporations, and a broadening of possible strategic options for companies and investors. I am very excited to join Openspace as we double down on the leading platform that’s been built so far in order to continue to deliver a unique and holistic proposition to our portfolio companies and investors. My experience working with funds and companies on a broad range of strategic initiatives complements the incredible capabilities Openspace already has, and I look forward to working with the team and all our stakeholders on the next stage of growth,” said Omesh.

Johan brings a vital perspective on the Indonesian market. He hails from the investment team at Falcon House Partners, where he was a Director with a mandate to cover the country’s burgeoning consumer-focused sectors. His market-experience stretches back to former roles in Indies Capital and Quvat, as well as IBM in Jakarta.

“Johan has worked across private equity and technology and his experience taking Indonesian businesses from mid-stage opportunity to mainstream profitability will be essential for the evolution of the market opportunity in technology” said Jessica Huang Pouleur, Partner at Openspace and head of OSV+.
“I’m really excited to be at Openspace, working to bolster their already strong track record of investing in leading edge innovations that genuinely improve people’s daily lives. The technology sector in Southeast Asia, especially in Indonesia, has evolved rapidly and, in doing so, created an ecosystem that continues to nurture new ideas and generate significant investment opportunities,” said Johan.
