This week, we’re shining a spotlight on one of our investment team members, Trang Vi, who mainly navigates the Vietnamese market. Trang’s daily grind involves establishing and nurturing relationships with startup founders/CEOs and fellow venture capitalists, spotting promising investment opportunities, and providing support to our portfolio companies. Let’s learn more about Trang!

What do you do here at Openspace?

I'm a part of the Openspace Investments team, where I mainly cover the Vietnam market but also help out in Singapore. My daily responsibilities are quite diverse, including building relationships with founders/other VCs, scouting for promising investment opportunities, performing due diligence, contributing to internal OSV projects, and offering support to our portfolio companies wherever I can.

Why did you join Openspace?

As I was looking for a new opportunity, I reached out to a few friends in the VC ecosystem, and their positive feedback about Openspace motivated me to take a chance and send a cold email to Dennis (our head of Vietnam). It turned out to be one of the most rewarding decisions I made in 2022.

What is one unexpected thing about you?

Every year, I pick a new activity to focus on, last year was scuba diving, and this year is weight lifting—I can hold my plank (with an added 35kg weight) for 1 minute now  💪🏻

Who’s someone you’ve always wanted to meet?

Trevor Noah—I’m genuinely intrigued by his unique background and love his charisma.

What’s one thing you really like about working here?

I apologize for repeating this the 25th time, but it's definitely our team. I feel very lucky to work with such smart, inspiring, and cooperative team members every day. Everyone is extremely hardworking and we also have a lot of fun spending time outside of work together.

Do you have a particularly interesting or memorable highlight of working here?

My first offsite in Thailand was quite memorable, as it was the first time I met the entire team in person, two weeks after joining. I learned how to surf for the first time with Hian and Juancho and even got thrown into the pool (fully clothed) as a part of my welcoming ceremony, haha.

What’s a really good piece of advice that you’ve received from someone in the office?

Treat others the way you want to be treated. Do right. Do your best.

If you were to make an Openspace pizza, what would be your chosen topping?

The most difficult question here 😫 my go-to is usually the mushroom and truffle oil pizza.
